   Did You Know?          

>> The female gives birth to a single offspring, however there is often a second joey born while the first joey is still nursing.

>>

Parma wallabies can walk using all four legs plus its tail, but hopping is faster.

>>

A Parma wallaby will shake its head and body when nervous.

>> A female is called a doe, flyer, jill or roo.

>> A male is called a buck, boomer, jack or old man.

>> A joey comes out of the pouch for the first time at around 5 months and is permentantly out at around 7 months.

 


 Fast Facts

Size:
Males have a sitting height of 19 - 23 inches; females' sitting height is 18 - 21 inches

Weight:
Males weigh about 9 - 13 pounds; females weigh about 7 - 10.5 pounds

Diet:
Herbivore; eats grasses and leaves

Life Span:
About 6 - 8 years in the wild; 11 - 15 years in captivity

Habitat:
Wet forests comprised of trees with hard, closely packed leaves; thick scrubby undergrowth

Fun Facts:
Once thought to be extinct, but rediscovered in 1965.

Parma wallabies can go for long periods without water.

Conservation:
Near threatened

Land clearing, feral cats and foxes are threats.

Considered a pest in New Zealand.

Geographic Location:
Natural range - eastern New South Wales, Australia.
Introduced to Kawau Island, New Zealand.
