Try looking for us in the northern portion of east coast of Madagascar.
Yoohoo, up here! Red ruffed lemur are found in the upper strata
of forests.
Fruit is good: Red ruffed lemurs are vegetarian, and probably eat
a high percentage of fruit.
Cute as the dickens: Head and body 51-55 cm, tail length 56-62
cm. Body deep red except underparts and extremities. Forehead, crown and
tail black. White patch at back of neck. Weight about 48 kg.
Reproduction: Gestation is 98-106 days. A high percentage of twinning
has been observed.
We're special: Longevity is unknown in wild, particularly for this
species, which is considered exceptionally rare.
General information: Largest of the Lemuridae. Lives in pair-bonded
families. The only lemurid that leaves young in nests. All members of
the genus Varecia are characterized by long, dense fur, especially around
the neck.
Status: Endangered and rare.
