Butterflies in Bloom at Roger Williams Park Zoo
May 24 – September 1, 2008
This summer, immerse yourself in an enchanting wonderland where a winding garden path puts you in the midst of some of nature’s most amazing winged wonders – hundreds of beautiful butterflies.
At Flutterby: Butterflies in Bloom at Roger Williams Park Zoo, children and adults alike will wonder as they wander through a picturesque 2100-square foot greenhouse filled with some of North America’s most beautiful butterfly species. And just as butterflies fill the air, striking flowers and nectar plants cover the ground, an enticement to bring these “flowers in flight” even closer – perhaps even close enough to land right on you!
In the midst of this whimsical setting, enjoy these fun interactive elements:
- Watch the “birth” of a butterfly as it emerges from its chrysalis
- Become an expert at identifying the many different species by name, and see if you can spot them in the wild
- Find out some surprising butterfly fun facts, like why they “taste” with their feet and how they use mimicry to survive
- Let little ones literally get into the butterfly life cycle at a caterpillar and butterfly photo station
- Learn about the threats butterflies face, and why many are on the brink of extinction
- See a caterpillar food garden, and learn how you can set up a butterfly garden in your own backyard
A delight for butterfly and gardening enthusiasts alike, Flutterby is a truly immersive experience where people of all ages can once again become enamored with nature and find a new appreciation for some of our earth’s most enchanting and imperiled species – butterflies, in bloom.
