Roger Williams Park Zoo Sees Record Spring Break Attendance

Zoo Welcomed Over 72,000 Visitors

During RI, MA, CT Vacation Weeks, April 14 - 27

Providence, RI –  Roger Williams Park Zoo posted record spring break attendance numbers during the recent Rhode Island, Massachusetts and Connecticut public school vacation weeks, April 14 through 27, welcoming over 72,000 visitors over the two week period.

This figure tops the Zoo’s previous record-high spring vacation week attendance of 59,000 set in 2002, when all three states vacationed in one week.  This year, Rhode Island and Connecticut schools vacationed April 14 through 18, followed by Massachusetts from April 21 to 25.  But even adjusting for the two-week period puts the 2002 figures at 67,000 - more than 5,000 less than this year.

“Of course, we’re thrilled to have seen such a great turnout,” said Zoo Director, Jack Mulvena.  “It’s a real affirmation that southern New Englanders love coming to the Zoo, and we’re looking forward to that trend continuing as we host new exhibits and events throughout the summer.  We’re hopeful that, in the face of a down economy and high gas prices, this record attendance is an indicator that families will continue to find a day trip to the Zoo to be a great value.”

The Zoo is set to open an immersive summer-long butterfly exhibit called “Flutterby:  Butterflies in Bloom” on Memorial Day weekend.  Around the same time, a brand new red panda exhibit will make its debut.  And later in the summer, the Zoo will hold a grand re-opening for it’s revitalized Fabric of Africa exhibits area, complete with an improved and expanded elephant exhibit and a new, raised elephant and giraffe viewing deck.  For more information, visit www.rogerwilliamsparkzoo.org or call 401-785-3510.

Roger Williams Park Zoo is open year round.  Admission is $12 for adults, $8 for seniors (62+) and $6 for children (ages 3 – 12).  Children under 3 and Zoo members get in free.

Roger Williams Park Zoo is operated and maintained by the Rhode Island Zoological Society and is owned by the City of Providence.
